Being Mindful May Have More Benefits Than You Realize!

A recent study of German University students reveals that being mindful may improve a person’s ability to regulate their emotions. After participants were in a state of induced bad mood they were randomly assigned to a mindfulness activity, another distraction, or a rumination group. Results revealed that those who participated in a mindful activity had higher implicit and explicit mood scores compared to the other two groups.

R&R in Recovery

It’s important to remember that successful eating disorder recovery does not solely depend on managing the eating behaviours themselves. Sleep is an aspect of well-being that is easily overlooked in eating disorder management. However, a proper night’s rest can influence our relationship and interaction with food throughout the day and thus may be hold an important contribution along the road of recovery. #eatingdisorder #recovery

Poetry Friday - It Must Be Hard For You

In her fourth poem, "It Must Be Hard For You", Brenda McDonald speaks to the value and significance of others, whether it be a physician, therapist, loved one or friend, lending a listening ear and recognizing and validating their experiences and emotions.

It Must Be Hard For You
"It must be hard for you..."
Putting recognition and words to the struggle
Not feeling sorry for me
I don't feel sorry for me
Just letting me know you realize
It's difficult to live with mental illness
It's a step towards understanding
Try this therapy or maybe that one?
What about this medication or that?
I appreciate the years of research
Developing ways to help treat
But first, thank you for recognizing
"It must be hard for you..."

Remembering and focusing on positive times
Not easy to do right now
Life is so very challenging
Negatives have more volume and control
Certainly want to tip the teeter totter down
Down towards improved mental health
Takes lots of energy to push away negative weight
Negative weight of demoralizing self-chatter
Get it off its comfortable seat, push, pierce, pounce
So the teeter totter can tip down towards encouraging positives
I know, only I know what it's like to be me but
"It must be hard for you..."

It's like a pause before the attack
Attack to fight the demons so that I can live
Live life as I’m meant to
Without the steel chains of anxiety and depression
Holding me face down to the ground
Who really cares, I don't matter anyway
Knowing I am loved, supported and valued
By others but also myself
Can loosen the chains, make life more rewarding
Many things in life are hard, some obvious
Mental illness is often hidden and overwhelming
"It must be hard for you..."

Imagine what it would be like to live with a wild mind
Mind taking you to places you don't want to go
Telling you untruths, put downs, nonsense
Making you behave in ways you don’t want to
Rituals again, worry more, fatigue always
Leaving you with feelings you don't want to have
Resentment, irritability, frustration, confusion
Please feel free to express your emotions around me
Tears of compassion, it's ok to cry
Smiles of connection, we all need that
Respectful humour can reroute misty eyes into laughter
Oh, how I need to laugh more
"It must be hard for you..."

Not looking to be fixed or cured
I am looking for healing, guidance, direction
Tired of the guilt, shame, blame cast on myself
By myself, over and over daily, let me breathe
Everyone has a story to tell, listen one and all
Hope is in every soul, let it out to permeate
Permeate through one's heart and mind
Feeling hopeless takes away, never gives
But it is real for many
"It must be hard for you..."

Thank you
Putting words and recognition to the struggle
Means a lot to me

Psychiatrists New Role on Medical Ward Care Teams

The gap between physical and mental healthcare is starting to be bridged thanks to a number of hospitals in the United States which are trying out a new pilot program. In the past, ‪psychiatrists‬ saw patients on medical units only as consultants, when called upon by other physicians after a mental health crisis emerged such as the development of ‪delirium‬ or when a patient becomes difficult to manage. However, with this new project, psychiatrists are an integral member of medical ward teams, including those in the ‪ICU‬.

By including psychiatrists on these medical teams, they have the opportunity to round on all the patients on the unit, helping to identify and tackle mental or emotional health problems early on, provide bedside ‪psychotherapy‬ and support, and offering much needed input regarding medications and other modalities to use and avoid in order to prevent the development or worsening of ‪‎mental health‬ issues.

While the hospitals are currently studying the impact of this new program, early data has shown that by having psychiatrists on the medical wards length of stay in hospital can be shortened, and they further postulate that these new teams may even reduce the chance that patients may need to be readmitted.

Mental Health Week 2016

5/4/2016

It's that time of year again! CMHA National's annual Mental Health Week is running from May 2 to May 8, 2016! Each year, MHW encourages Canadians to ‪#‎GetLoud‬ about mental health, offers support to those suffering from mental illness, and promotes the development of skills to boost our general mental well-being.

Getting involved is simple! You can:
  • Wear green to break down ‪#‎stigma‬ as back in the 1800s green ribbons were used to label individuals as "insane"
  • Engage in a dialogue with others about ‪#‎mentalhealth‬
  • Talk to a loved one or your doctor about your mood and mental well-being
  • Share your story or your commitment to mental health by being creative and showing off your art like photos, paintings, and songs
  • Share #GetLoud on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) to show your support, and encourage others to obtain and maintain positive mental health
  • Donate to your local CMHA branch

You can find out all the ways to get involved and #GetLoud this week by visiting: http://getloud.mentalhealthweek.ca

Sugar Addiction

5/3/2016

It has recently been postulated that sugar consumption can augment the dopamine reward circuitry in the brain, resulting in addictive-like behaviour. This, along with the rising ‪#‎obesity‬ epidemic, has lead to new research horizons that aim to investigate a potential treatment strategy for ‪#‎sugar ‬‪#‎addiction‬ similar to that used for drug abuse.
