Eating Disorders and Media Influence

Amelia Tait, a writer for VICE, recently opened up about her own personal history with an eating disorder and shares how for her the battle with her weight and food was unrelated to the Barbie dolls she grew up playing with or the models in the magazines she used to read; a unique stance in today's society. In the thought-provoking article "My Eating Disorder Had Nothing To Do With Barbie or the Media", she interviews others with anorexia, who developed disordered eating behaviours not necessarily because of media influence, but because of other mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, and OCD‬, and because these behaviours provided a way to seek relief from stress and gain a sense of control over their lives.

"It is pretty obvious that the media does perpetuate unrealistic body standards. The most common example is that, if Barbie were real, she'd have no liver and walk on all fours, but the question is: does it matter? The implication is that unrealistic body standards lead to eating disorders, which is an argument I believe reduces a severe mental illness to a vain aspiration to be a runway model—something I have never personally aspired to.

'A lot of people don't see eating disorders as actual illnesses," Carrie Arnold, a 34-year-old freelance science writer, author, and recovered anorexic tells me. 'They see them as choices. And thinking that eating disorders are caused by images of thin models really serves to drive home the point that they're all about vanity.'"

Mental Health at Dalhousie

From the Humans of Dalhousie University Facebook Page:

"At first they told me it was anxiety so they gave me a little white pill to slow down my heart rate. Then they said depression, so they gave me a little yellow pill to make my brain fuzzy. Bi-polar was a little pink pill that had a nasty after taste. A little pill got to choose how I felt that day. I thought my psychiatrist was helping until I missed one half hour appointment and got a bill for 200$. I was left completely powerless, I pushed a lot of people away from me and I couldn't recognize who I was anymore. I became the stigmas my illnesses carried. I was the epitome of everything I promised I said I would never become and I hated myself. I felt worthless, I felt like I had no control over anything in my life and I took it out on my body.

I'm doing better than I have in years. I have longer good periods and fewer bad moments. My family is my entire universe, my friends are my safety net. I’m the happy carefree one in a crowd. I like it that way- no one knew, no one will ever know. I still don’t sleep most nights but I’m doing okay. And okay seems pretty great to me.”

Put your knowledge and skills to the test with the case of a 13 year old girl who presents to the ED with an acute onset of amnesia, confusion, and slurred speech.  Her vitals are stable, bloodwork is normal, and examination only reveals some muscle soreness and gait instability.

With regards to her past medical history, she was diagnosed with PANDAS and was treated for tics with some psychotropic medications as a young child.  She has a previous history of viral meningitis, MRSA abscesses, and an unusual seizure history for which she was treated with antiepileptic drugs.  She also has a history of sexual abuse dating back 6 years ago, around the same time that her sister tried to suffocate her brother and social services became involved. She has experienced bullying at school, and 6 months ago she had been engaging in cutting behaviours, for which she received counselling.  In the last 3-4 months her mother reports that she has displayed disturbing writings, drawings, and conversations with others.  She has no psychiatric diagnoses, nor does she have a history of suicide attempts or psychiatric hospitalizations.

Can you come up with a diagnosis or treatment plan?
