How To Deal With Anxiety - A Child's Perspective

3/17/2016

Filmmaker and radio producer Bianca Giaever sought out to make a film on ‪anxiety‬ from a child's point of view. In her interviews with these young people, Giaever asked each of them to tell a story that they could make into a movie. What resulted, was a delightful and heartwrenchingly cute short film inspired by one of the 6 year old girls Giaever spoke with, who at the end of the film demonstrates some pretty powerful insight and advice for us all in how to deal with negative feelings like anxiety and disappointment. A must watch!

"I was curious to see if a six year old could relate to emotions like anxiety at such a young age. I didn't know that this advice would necessarily come from Asa — I interviewed a few different six year olds for this project by offering free babysitting or just asking. I asked some parents and figured that six years old is the perfect age, when kids can coherently tell a story but aren't self conscious or inhibiting themselves at all yet."

If you enjoyed the first part of the series on Star Wars and what it can teach us about mental illness, then we definitely suggest checking out part 2! This time we assess the villainous characters or those on the “Dark Side” including Darth Vader, Jabba the Hutt, and Chancellor Palpatine.

Disorders described in this piece include, "borderline and narcissistic personality traits, psychopathy, PTSD‬, partner violence risk, developmental stages, and of course Oedipal conflicts."

Are you a fan of Star Wars? If so, did you know that two psychiatrists have written a series of papers based on their examination of mental illnesses using the infamous characters from the movie series?

As the article "How 'Star Wars' Can Help You Understand Serious Psychotic Disorders" explains, the purpose of their work is to "allow students and/or patients to have a visual representation of a disorder that’s often just talked about in theory or by symptoms", giving us a chance to not only have some fun learning about psychiatric disorders but to learn a few things too!

In Part 1 of this series, we explore the psychopathology among some of our most beloved characters (aka "the good guys" or the "light side of the Force") including Yoda, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, C-3PO, and of course Chewbacca. Disorders touched on include "histrionic, obsessive-compulsive, and dependent personality traits, perinatal psychiatric disorders, prodromal schizophrenia, pseudo-dementia, frontal lobe lesions, pathological gambling, and even malingering." (You can read the full article by accessing it through the Dalhousie or your own institution's library system: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25933645).
